The 1st COMPLAINTS CHOIR of Birmingham

Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kotcha-Kalleinen invited the people of Birmingham to complain about anything they wanted, and sing their complaints out together with fellow complainers. The project was open to everybody - no singing skills required.  Many people sent in their complaints - about Birmingham, about other people, about world issues and most of all: about themselves. Fifteen people finally signed up to the project, who had the courage to take responsibility for their complaints. The Participants transformed the complaints into an impressive choir song during a two-week complaints workshop with the help of local musician Mike Hurley.

The song was rehearsed and performed at Springhill Institute, The Red Lion pub, and later for the BBC Big Screen as a warm-up act for the London Royal Opera.

Since the Complains Choir started in Birmingham 2005 it has branched out world wide. Kalleinen and Kochta has initiated choirs in Helsinki, Germany and Russia. Now complaints choirs are being self initiated beyond their assistance in Canada, America and Norway.

Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen is a German artist based in Helsinki working with performance, video and events. Tellervo Kalleinen, is an Artist based in Helsinki, Finland. Working with video, performance and events, she constructs slightly twisted situations in which interaction can happen. Most of her works are participatory and are based on creative collaboration. Kochta and Kalleinen have collaborated since 2003.
